Keeping our family and belongings safe is of the utmost importance. Security in and around the home or business has become essential today to deter and prevent intruders from harming our property and family. This article will offer some of the possible security lighting options available today.

Some areas in which you can install security lighting are residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional properties. Examples include motion-sensing floodlights and pathlights.  For ideal energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness in fixtures being left on all night, most fixtures use LED technology.

LED-based security lighting has become increasingly popular due to its energy efficiency and long lifespan. These lights offer more options on the color spectrum.

Passive infrared sensors can turn lights on when a person, animal, or vehicle approaches your home. These types of lights can deter intruders, who know that they have been seen as the light turns on. This lighting can also offer a loud chime, which can scare away someone considering entering your property.  Light fixtures can be set to come on only when it is dark outside through the use of a photocell. Many manufacturers offer camera options that will record when the light fixture is activated. This will also provide additional information for law enforcement.

Light with Built-in Camera

Lighting: An Integral Part of Home Security

Outdoor lighting is an essential part of a home’s security system. The latest technology offers recording devices built in and can even provide microphones, allowing you to speak to someone entering your property. These smart devices can be controlled, and their video can be viewed from your phone, providing added security when you are away from home.  Doorbells with built-in cameras are also available and can help protect deliveries you receive from theft when they arrive at an empty house.

According to Sara Harshbarger, the Brinks Home SVP and security expert, “One of the key benefits of outdoor lighting is that when positioned thoughtfully, it can effectively illuminate the entryways to your home, as well as other important structures like garages or sheds. Lighting up pathways such as driveways and sidewalks also adds a layer of visibility that can help deter people and creatures from approaching the home unnoticed.”

Types of Security Lighting

  • All-Night Lighting: provides illumination throughout the night and can be automated with photocells programmed dusk to dawn. This typically results in a slightly higher energy cost.  This can be offset with the use of LED lighting.
  • Motion-Activated Lighting: activates when a person or animal detects motion and can scare off intruders. Slightly more cost-effective.
  • Hi/Low Combo Lighting: can provide a low intensity light all night, but will increase in intensity if someone is detected. This is energy-efficient lighting.

Key Considerations

Placement is essential so that lighting is positioned to avoid creating glare, which can inhibit visibility, and also creating shadows.

Energy Efficiency is essential, and LED lighting is the best.

Vandalism prevention requires that the lighting be mounted high enough to prohibit tampering.
