Why You Should Consider Updating Your Electrical Devices

When should you replace switches and/or receptacles?

There are several reasons you might want to switch your electrical outlets and switches.  See below why it might be time.

Safety:

Older devices can wear out.  Receptacles that become loose are more than a nuisance.  This loose connection between appliances and the device can cause arcing, heat, and in some cases, fire!  If there are cracks or burn marks on the receptacle, you should have a professional analyze the device immediately.

Modern code (from 2008 until present) requires receptacles in homes to be tamper-resistant.  Tamper-resistant receptacles help prevent objects from being inserted into receptacles by accident or curious children.  These devices remove the need for the plastic inserts that were used for this purpose in the past.

Decor:

Many older homes have beige, builder-grade devices and covers that may not fit your personal style.  Many styles and colors are now available.

Comfort /Convenience:

Dimmer switches can provide the option for ambiance lighting when you want it, and a bright working light when you need it.  Upgrading to receptacles with USB ports can help make charging your devices much easier.

GFCI:

Ground fault protection increases safety, especially in bathrooms and kitchens, where water may be nearby.  GFCI’s protect against shocks by detecting a ground fault, which occurs when a power source and a grounded surface meet.

Lights Flickering:

This can be a sign of a loose wire or failing switch and may indicate a fire hazard or an overloaded circuit.

Burning Odor:

The receptacle may be overheating due to the circuit being overloaded, or the wiring may be faulty.

How Electrical System Improvements Can Be Beneficial

Can you benefit from an upgrade?

Fuse Box: If your home was built before the 1960s and hasn’t been upgraded, you may have fuses; remove the old fuse box and replace it with a circuit breaker panel.  Fuse-protected boxes are obsolete, and replacement fuses can be hard to find.  Circuit breakers can be reset without purchasing replacement components. New electrical panels can offer updated protection against power surges and short circuiting.

Insufficient Outlets: Older homes tend to have fewer outlets than newer builds, leaving homeowners with a myriad of extension cords to meet the needs of this millennium.  An upgrade can provide space and capacity for the many additional loads that today’s homeowners require.

Energy Efficiency: Lower your overall energy usage and be environmentally friendly by switching to efficient electrical appliances and mechanical utilities.

Safety: Reduce the risk of fire and bring your system up to the newest electrical codes

Home Value: If you are thinking of selling, an upgraded electrical system can be a great selling feature.
